The Etta Ceramic Vase — Drip-Glazed Amphora Form, Twin Handles — CharlesTed Home

The Etta — a twin-handled amphora form in earthenware, glazed in three flowing bands of cream, honey amber and deep treacle brown that drip down the body in vertical streaks — the rustic country vase where the kiln does the finishing work.

The Etta brings a finish that no two pieces will ever wear identically — a traditional drip glaze in three layered tones, a band of unglazed cream and pale clay around the rim, a sheet of warm honey amber across the upper shoulder, and a deep treacle brown pooling and streaking down the bulbous body to the foot. The glaze is applied wet and allowed to find its own path in the kiln, melting and flowing down the curved surface so the streaks fall vertically, the colours blending where they meet rather than holding to a clean line. The result is a piece with the unmistakable feel of a hand-thrown country pottery jar from a Tuscan farmhouse or a Spanish village kitchen.

The detail that makes it different

The detail that makes the Etta feel like an antique rather than a reproduction is the deliberate imperfection — the slightly uneven rim, the exposed terracotta showing through at the lip and the base, the way the cream upper band varies from one side of the vase to the other. These are the marks of traditional drip-glaze pottery, and they give the piece an immediate sense of age and use. The twin-handled amphora silhouette draws on classical Mediterranean storage forms — vessels that once held olive oil, wine, or grain — but the generous 15cm mouth opens it up to be filled with armfuls of dried wheat, foraged grasses, eucalyptus, or a loose hand-tied bunch of garden flowers. At 37cm tall and over six kilos, this is a vase with weight and presence, designed to anchor a hearth, a console table, or a kitchen worktop.
