Grandiflora Faux Magnolia Flower Stem

The best arrangement mixes this with the foliage version. Our plain magnolia foliage stem is the same 85cm length without a bloom. Two or three foliage stems with one or two flowering ones is how the plant actually grows, and it reads far better than a vessel full of flowers.

85cm gives you options. Full length in a floor vase or a tall vessel, or cut down for a console or a mantel. Aim for a finished arrangement about one and a half times the height of the vessel.

Put the bloom where it can be seen. Turn the flowering stem to face the room rather than the wall, and keep it slightly higher than the foliage around it.

The lower section is bare, which lets the stem sit deep in a vessel without foliage crushing at the rim. That is where you cut.

One flower, and that is the point.

Real magnolia grandiflora carries its blooms singly, large and cupped, held in a rosette of leaves. Most faux magnolia gets this wrong and gives you a spray of small flowers, which no magnolia has ever done. A single generous bloom is what makes this read as the actual plant.

The flower is layered in ivory and butter cream, with the outer petals opening back and the inner ones still cupped around a pale green centre. Petals in a single flat white would look like paper; the tonal shift from cream to ivory across the petal is what gives it depth.

The leaves carry the bronze reverse that real magnolia has, glossy dark green on the face and copper-brown underneath. It is one of the few leaves where both sides show at once, and getting it right is the difference between convincing and obvious.

There is a wire core through the stem, so the branch and the flower can be angled to sit properly in a vessel rather than staying where the box left them.

Two or three foliage stems to one or two flowering is the ratio. A vessel of nothing but blooms is the single thing that gives faux flowers away, because no plant flowers that heavily.

Keep the flowering stem slightly taller than the foliage around it and turned toward the room. A flower half hidden behind leaves is a wasted flower.

Cut one stem shorter than the rest. Everything at the same height reads as a bunch; varied heights read as branches someone cut.

An ivory bloom against a pale ceramic disappears. A dark glazed vessel in brown, charcoal or deep green makes the flower the thing you see.

A single generous arrangement on a console beats three small ones spread along it. Magnolia has scale, and it wants a vessel that matches.

Dust the leaves every few weeks with a soft dry cloth. Broad glossy leaves show dust more than fine foliage does, and dusty faux greenery is what makes it look fake.

The petals need a soft brush, not a cloth. A cloth catches on layered petals and can lift them out of shape. A dry make-up brush or a soft paintbrush is ideal.

Do not stand it in water. If your vessel holds water for real stems, keep this one dry. Water can lift the petal and leaf coatings.

Cut with secateurs, not scissors. There is wire inside the stem, and household scissors will neither cut it cleanly nor survive.

Keep the bloom out of strong direct sun. A cream flower yellows faster than green foliage fades, so a stem in a sunny window will discolour noticeably within a couple of years.

What to expect. The petals may need reshaping by hand after unpacking. Open them gently outward from the centre and the flower will sit correctly.
