Will it fit? As tall as it is wide, its squat, grounded shape sits happily on a shelf, a mantel or the end of a console. For stems, aim for around 30cm showing above the rim.

Ceramic with a warm cream crackle glaze, crazed finely across the whole surface, with small dark inclusions throughout. The crackle is a deliberate effect, formed as glaze and clay cool at different rates, and one of the oldest decorative techniques in ceramics.

A thickened, rolled rim and two small lug handles at the shoulder give it the character of a traditional storage jar. The handles are decorative, so lift it by the body. Every crazing pattern is different.

Do not put water in it. The ceramic is not sealed for liquid, so water will work through and mark the surface beneath. It is made for dried stems, faux foliage, or standing empty.

Wipe the outside with a damp cloth and dry straight away. Do not submerge, and avoid anything abrasive. Use a mat on polished surfaces. The crazing may develop very slowly and darken over time, which is the glaze behaving as intended.

Leave it empty to let the glaze speak, or add three or four dried grasses leaning loosely from the rim. Group it as the low, wide piece among two or three vessels of different heights, with something dark or wooden nearby for contrast. A lamp to one side brings out the crackle beautifully.

Can I use it with fresh flowers?

No. It is not watertight. A small watertight liner sitting below the rim would work for a few short stems, but it is best with dried or faux stems, or empty.

What is the crackle in the glaze?

A deliberate crackle glaze, formed as the glaze and clay shrink at different rates. It is what gives the jar its aged look.

Are the handles functional?

They are decorative. Please lift the jar by the body rather than the handles.

Will mine look like the photograph?

Very close, but crazing and inclusions form differently on every piece, so each one is unique.
