Twin scroll handles, hand-finished terracotta, a chalky weathered surface — the amphora-form urn that looks like it's been lifted from a Greek courtyard rather than ordered online.

The Santorini Terracotta Urn is built around one of the oldest, most quietly confident shapes in decorative design — the Greek amphora. A classical amphora silhouette with a tapered base, generous belly and twin scroll handles, hand-finished in a chalky, lime-washed terracotta with visible tonal variation across the surface. The form is sculptural enough to work entirely as a standalone object — empty, on a hearth, in a corner, beside a piece of furniture — but the 11cm opening is also wide enough to take a substantial faux stem arrangement of olive, eucalyptus or hydrangea. A piece that does the work of a vase, a sculpture and an architectural anchor at once.

The detail that makes it different

Most large decorative urns in this price bracket either go fully ornamental — gloss-glazed and obviously decorative — or fully rough, with the cheap orange-terracotta-and-cobwebs look of an unfinished garden pot. The Santorini sits between them. The clay is hand-finished with a weathered, lime-washed surface that reads as genuinely aged rather than artificially distressed, with the soft cream-and-sand tonal variation that real Mediterranean pottery develops through years of sun, dust and lime wash. The twin handles are scroll-finished and proportioned to balance the body without dominating it — they're the kind of detail that separates an amphora reproduction from a working piece of pottery. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, the urn quietly slots into a hallway, a hearth, a covered terrace or a sheltered garden corner with equal authority.

Style empty as a sculptural object on a hearth or beside a sofa, or fill with a substantial faux stem arrangement — olive, eucalyptus or hydrangea stems flatter the amphora form particularly well.

Good to know

Where does it work best?

On a hearth, in a hallway, beside a sofa, on a stone or tiled floor in a kitchen-diner, or outside on a covered terrace, by a front door or in a sheltered garden corner. The 40cm height gives it real floor-level presence, but it also works on a wide sideboard or low console where its silhouette is at sight-line.

Can it be used outside?

Yes — terracotta is suitable for outdoor use, and the urn has the sturdiness to handle a sheltered patio or porch. For long-term outdoor placement, especially through winter, we'd recommend keeping it under cover or raising it slightly off the ground to prevent water pooling at the base; sustained frost cycles can stress any terracotta piece over time.

Is it watertight enough to use with fresh flowers?

Natural terracotta is porous, so for fresh flowers and water we'd recommend using a sealed liner or a glass jar inside the urn rather than filling it directly. For faux stems and dried arrangements, this isn't an issue and the urn can be styled directly.

Will each piece look exactly like the photograph?

No — and that's part of the appeal. The hand-finished surface means each urn has its own pattern of tonal variation, lime wash and natural marks in the clay. Expect the silhouette and overall colour to match closely, but the surface character will be unique to each piece.

How do I clean it?

Dust with a soft dry cloth or a soft brush to lift dust from the surface and handles. For outdoor pieces, a quick rinse with clean water and a soft brush will lift any garden debris — avoid pressure washers and abrasive scrubbers, which can disturb the weathered finish.
