A ribbed cream ceramic lamp with a gourd base and a natural linen shade.
A hand-glazed ceramic base worked all over in dense vertical ribbing, under an oat-flecked linen drum shade.
Most lamps in this category sit on smooth ceramic or moulded resin that exists purely to hold the shade up. Here the surface is the design. Browse all table lamps.
A ribbed base does something a smooth one cannot. It reads as an object when the lamp is off.

The measurements, and where it fits
31cm of ceramic under a 36cm shade, on a 13cm foot. Hand-glazed base, natural linen drum.
The foot is only 13cm across. That is what makes it fit a narrow surface.
The 13cm foot is the practical figure. The gourd swells to 20cm at its widest, but it stands on a much smaller base, so it takes up far less surface than a straight-sided lamp of the same presence. On a slim console or a crowded bedside that matters more than the overall height.
The shade is the wider measurement at 36cm, so on a narrow surface check the shade rather than the base. Allow a depth of at least 36cm, ideally more, or the shade will sit proud of the front edge.
At 57.5cm this is taller than a typical bedside lamp, which usually runs around 40cm. That makes it generous enough to anchor a sideboard, a hallway console or a larger bedside, and slightly commanding on a small nightstand.
As a pair it works flanking a sofa across two side tables, or framing a bed across two larger nightstands. Aim for the bottom of the shade at roughly shoulder height when sitting up in bed.
The flex is 150cm. Measure from where the lamp will stand to the nearest socket before ordering.
The detail that makes it different
The ribbing is the whole product, and it is why the lamp works unlit.
Vertical ribs run from neck to base with the slight irregularity of hand-glazing, creating depth and shadow on the ceramic itself that you can read from across a room. A smooth base disappears the moment the lamp is off. This one does not.
The gourd silhouette gives the piece weight and presence a flat cylindrical lamp cannot achieve, swelling out from a narrow foot and drawing back in at the neck.
The soft cream glaze sits between bone-white and warm pebble, with subtle tonal pooling and a slight pearlescent shimmer where the glaze has gathered between the ribs. That pooling is what gives a pale lamp its depth, and it is only possible on a ribbed surface.
The natural linen shade in an oat-flecked weave diffuses light into a warm ambient glow rather than a hard task spotlight. Linen has enough weave irregularity to soften a bulb without dimming it.
Because each base is hand-glazed, every piece carries its own variations in glaze pooling, tonal depth and ribbing character, and the shade weave varies slightly across batches. Yours will not match the photographs exactly.
Why you will love it
- Dense vertical ribbing, so the base reads as an object rather than a support
- Hand-glazed ceramic, with tonal pooling no moulded base can replicate
- Gourd silhouette giving weight and presence a cylinder cannot
- A 13cm foot, so it takes up little surface for its size
- Natural linen shade that warms the light rather than spotlighting
- Taller than a standard bedside lamp, generous enough to anchor a console
- Soft cream glaze that sits with linen, rattan, oak and warm neutrals
- Every piece different, since the glaze is applied by hand
How our stylists would use it
A warm white LED at 2700K, up to 40W equivalent. Cool light on a cream glaze turns it grey and drains the warmth from the linen at the same time. This is the cheapest decision on this page and the one that matters most.
The ribbing is made of shadow, so a second light source raking across the base reveals it. A wall light nearby or daylight from a window does far more for the ceramic than the lamp's own bulb.
Two matching lamps at either end of a long console or sideboard frames the surface and gives you low warm light from two points rather than one.
Ribbed ceramic and linen both want something rough nearby. A basket, a timber surface or a jute rug stops a neutral corner reading flat.
A pale lamp against a pale wall disappears. Either give it a deeper wall behind, olive, sage or charcoal, or place something dark nearby, a glazed vessel or a timber frame, so the silhouette reads.
At a glance
Care and honest expectations
Dust the ribbing with a soft brush rather than a cloth. Vertical channels hold dust in the troughs, and a dry paintbrush clears them in seconds where a cloth just pushes it along.
The ceramic takes a barely damp cloth on a mark, dried straight after. Nothing abrasive on a glazed finish.
Never use water or spray on the linen shade. Water marks a fabric shade permanently. A soft dry brush, a lint roller or a hairdryer on the cool setting is all it needs.
Switch off and let the bulb cool before changing it or cleaning near the shade.
Interior rooms only. IP20 means no protection against moisture, so not a bathroom or a conservatory that gets condensation.
What to expect. Glaze pooling, tonal depth and ribbing character vary from piece to piece, and the shade weave differs slightly across batches. These variations are the point of the piece rather than flaws.
