Is it real rattan?

No. It is faux rattan, which gives the woven look of natural wicker but is more resistant to cracking and snagging, and wipes clean.

Does the lid stay open?

Yes. The hinged lid lifts up and stays open while you reach in, so there is no separate lid to put down.
