Most mini easels are a wire triangle with a lip. This one has been designed rather than manufactured.

The difference is the beading. Each leg is cast with a run of rounded beads, so the whole frame reads as turned metalwork rather than bent wire. It catches light along its length, which is why it holds up on a shelf even when there is nothing on it.

The finish does the rest. This is not a bright polished gold. It is an antiqued warm gold with darker shadows worked into the recesses, the sort of tone that sits comfortably against reclaimed timber, painted cabinetry and plaster walls rather than fighting them. Solid iron gives it the weight to stay put once loaded.

A good cookbook is a beautiful object that spends its life spine-out on a shelf. Standing one open, or closed and cover-forward, is one of the easiest ways to make a kitchen feel lived in rather than showroom clean.

Not every piece of art needs a wall. Leaning smaller framed pieces on a shelf or console gives a room a collected, gallery-ish feel, and an easel is what stops a small frame looking like it slid there by accident.

Place the easel and its artwork to one side rather than dead centre, then balance the other side with a lamp or a stem in a vase. Off-centre almost always looks more considered than symmetrical on a console.

Lean a larger unframed print flat against the back wall of the shelf, then set the easel and a smaller piece in front of it. Depth is what makes shelf styling look professional.

Allow for the depth. The legs splay 21cm front to back, so it needs a shelf or surface at least that deep. On a narrow floating shelf, measure before you buy.

Two lipped rests at the front hold the item's bottom edge. They suit a flat base best, so a frame with a very thick or uneven bottom rail may need trying before you commit to it.

Cast iron. Solid metal rather than hollow tube, which is why it has enough weight to stay planted with a book on it. Iron also holds the crisp definition of the beading in a way lighter metals do not.

Antique gold finish. A warm gold, deliberately aged, with darker tones sitting in the recesses of the beading. It reads as brass-adjacent rather than shiny new gold, so it works alongside the antique brass in our lighting range.

Beaded detailing. Runs the full length of both front legs and the back support, and is the reason the piece looks considered rather than functional.

Small variations in the antiquing are part of how this finish is applied and are not faults. Two easels will be siblings rather than twins.

Dust with a dry soft cloth. For kitchen use, wipe splashes off promptly rather than letting them dry on the finish.

Do not use metal polish, abrasive cleaners or scouring pads. The antiquing sits on the surface, and polishing will lift it back to bright metal in patches.

Keep it dry and indoors. Iron will mark if it sits in damp, so it is not one for a bathroom shelf or a conservatory that gets condensation.

If you are standing it on a polished timber surface, a small felt pad under each foot will protect the finish underneath.
