140cm of elm on a 38cm footprint — a console with real storage that still leaves a hallway walkable.
The hallway is the hardest room to furnish. It needs somewhere to put keys, post and the daily accumulation of things, but every centimetre taken from the width is a centimetre taken from getting past. The Abingdon console is built around that constraint: just 38cm deep, so it holds close to the wall, while running to 140cm long and standing 90cm tall to give the space a proper anchor rather than a token half-table. Three drawers with aged ring pulls handle the small clutter, and a full-length lower shelf takes baskets, books or a pair of shoes. Crafted from elm with an open, softly limed grain, it arrives fully assembled — in place and in use the day it lands.
What sets it apart
Storage without depth. Most consoles make you choose: slim enough for a hallway but purely decorative, or genuinely useful but too deep to pass comfortably. The Abingdon gets three full-width drawers into a 38cm frame, then adds a lower shelf that effectively doubles the usable surface without adding a single centimetre to the footprint. At 90cm tall it sits higher than a typical console, which puts the top at a comfortable standing height and leaves proper wall space above for a mirror or leaning artwork. Elm is the other reason to choose it — a looser, more expressive grain than oak, warmer in tone and full of movement, so a piece this pared back still has something to look at. And because it arrives assembled, the joinery is built properly rather than bolted together at your end.
How slim is 38cm, really?
A standard sideboard — around 45cm
A typical console table — around 42cm
The Abingdon console — 38cm
In a 100cm hallway that leaves over 60cm clear to walk through. Allow a wall of at least 150cm for the 140cm length, and check doorways and turns before ordering — it is delivered in one assembled piece.
