Almost every diffuser at this price uses a plastic or resin collar finished to look like stone. This one has a solid marble lid, and you notice the moment you lift it. Marble is cold to the touch, heavier than it looks, and cut from natural stone rather than moulded, so the veining on your piece will not be identical to the photograph.

The whole thing weighs 1.56kg boxed. That matters more than it sounds. A large diffuser on a console gets knocked by coats, bags and passing dogs, and a light bottle goes over. This one has enough mass in the base and the lid to stay where you put it.

At 500ml it is more than four times the volume of our mini. That is the difference between scenting a cloakroom and scenting the room people actually arrive into. Fragrance throw is a function of surface area and liquid volume, and a small bottle in a large room is simply the wrong tool.

38cm fibre reeds rather than natural rattan. Fibre wicks fragrance up more consistently and does not clog the way rattan does over time, so the throw stays steadier. At this length they also give the piece real presence, which a large diffuser needs to hold its own on a console.

Fresh fig, which is not the same as sweet fig. This is the green, sun-warmed version: soft fruit sweetness cut through with herbal leaf and settled on creamy woods. It reads as a Mediterranean morning rather than a dessert, and it suits a room you walk through as much as one you sit in.

Allow around 40cm of total height. The bottle is 18cm, but the reeds take it to roughly 38cm once they are in and fanned. That is the figure to measure against a shelf with something above it, not the bottle height.

The footprint is 8cm square, so it needs a little more surface than you might assume, particularly once the reeds splay outward at the top.

Scale it to the room. On a console, a mantel or a wide sideboard this looks right. On a narrow bathroom shelf it will overwhelm the space, and our mini diffuser is the better choice.

A hallway console is the single best position for a large diffuser. Scent sets the tone of a house before anyone has taken their coat off, and a 500ml bottle is the only size that will carry a hall.

Console styling works in odd numbers at varied heights. This is your tall element. Add a low bowl for keys and a table lamp, and the surface is done.

A tray under a large diffuser protects the surface when you turn the reeds and pulls the group together visually. On a waxed or reclaimed timber console this is not optional.

At 38cm the reeds are long enough to make a proper fan. Splay them outward rather than leaving them bunched upright. It looks considerably better and it scents better, because the reeds are not touching.

Competing fragrances in adjoining rooms cancel each other out. Run this through the ground floor and use a smaller bottle in the cloakroom, and the house reads as one thought rather than several.

Polished stone needs something to reflect. Near a window, a lamp or under a mirror, the lid does half the styling work on its own.

Turn the reeds every week or so, dry end down. That refreshes the throw. Turning them more often uses the oil faster without making the room smell better.

Wash your hands afterwards and keep the oil off polished and painted surfaces. Concentrated fragrance oil marks wood and stone if it sits, and with a 500ml bottle there is more of it to spill. Stand it on a tray.

Keep it out of direct sun and away from a radiator. Heat drives the oil off quickly and you lose weeks of life for nothing.

Wipe the marble with a dry cloth only. Marble is porous and dislikes anything acidic, so no vinegar and no household sprays.

Move it carefully. Lift a full bottle from the base rather than the lid, and take the reeds out first if you are carrying it between rooms.

What to expect. The scent is strongest in the first fortnight and settles to a quieter level after that. Every reed diffuser does this, and the settled level is usually the one you want to live with.
