A conventional corner sofa is one shape for one wall, and when you move house or rearrange a room it either fits or it does not. The Halstead is four separate modules, two corner pieces and two end pieces, which means the same sofa works as an L-shaped corner unit in one room and a straight 390cm four-seater run in another.

That also solves the biggest practical problem with a large sofa: getting it into the house. Four pieces go through doorways, round stairwell turns and up narrow halls where a single 300cm frame simply will not.

The upholstery is a polyester and linen blend, which is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise. You get the texture and matt finish of linen with considerably better colour fastness, less creasing and far more resilience to daily family use than pure linen would give at this scale.

Deep foam seats at 105cm and a solid pine frame underneath. The seat depth is what makes this a sofa for lying on rather than perching, which is what most people actually want from a sectional.

As a straight four-seater. All four in a line gives you roughly 390cm of sofa. Allow a wall of at least 400cm, plus 90cm of walking space in front.

As an L-shaped corner. Two pieces along each leg gives you roughly 195cm on each side. Allow around 200cm of clear space in both directions from the corner.

Measure the depth carefully. 105cm is deeper than a standard sofa, and it is the figure people underestimate. In a room under 350cm across, a 105cm-deep sofa plus a walkway takes most of it.

In an open plan room, pull the sofa off the wall and put a console table behind it. That is what defines a seating zone in a space with no walls to do it, and it is the single best use of a modular sectional.

The front legs of every section should sit on the rug. On a sofa this size that usually means 200 x 300cm as a minimum, and a small rug floating in front is the most common styling mistake there is.

A large neutral sofa is a canvas. Olive, terracotta, charcoal and rust all work against a linen blend. Odd numbers, varied sizes, no more than five across a long run. See our cushions.

Aim for 40cm to 45cm, roughly level with the seat, and leave 40cm between the table and the sofa. Browse coffee tables.

A table lamp at each end of a long sectional at 2400K to 2700K. Overhead light on a big pale sofa flattens it completely.

Vacuum with an upholstery attachment fortnightly, and plump the cushions weekly. Ten minutes a fortnight keeps a large sofa looking considerably better than it otherwise would.

Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, working inward from the edge. Do not rub. A polyester blend releases most spills far more willingly than pure linen would, which is a real advantage on a family sofa.

Rotate the modules. One genuine benefit of a sectional: if one end takes all the sitting, swap the pieces round once a year and the wear evens out.

Keep it out of strong direct sun, which fades any upholstery over years, and away from a radiator.

What to expect. Deep foam seats soften and ease in the first year. That is the material behaving correctly rather than a fault.
