Lighting / Wall Lights

Jenning Brass Wall Light

A solid brass wall light with a warm antique finish and a soft fabric shade, made for the walls that set the tone of a home.

Hallways, bedsides, alcoves and stairwells. The Jenning sits close to the wall at just 18cm deep, casting an even, low glow that flatters plaster, panelling and paint alike. Solid brass, E14 fitting, supplied with its mounting plate.

Our styling note

Hang it at eye level and the room reads calm. Hang it a little lower and it reads intimate. The Jenning is happy either way.

One

Why we chose this piece

Most wall lights are chosen to fill a gap. This one is chosen because it makes the wall look better.

We looked at a great many brass wall lights before settling on the Jenning, and the thing that separated it was restraint. The proportions are quiet. The backplate is small enough at 13cm by 5.5cm to sit neatly against panelling or a narrow pier of wall without crowding it. The arm is short. The shade does the talking.

It is solid brass rather than brass-effect metal, which matters more than it sounds. Solid brass carries its antique finish with real depth, and it ages rather than wears. Over the years it will darken slightly in the places hands and light reach most, which is exactly what you want from a metal like this.

Two

Why you will love it

The light is soft, not sharp

The fabric shade diffuses the bulb rather than exposing it, so you get a warm wash rather than a hot spot. In a hallway that means a welcoming glow instead of a glare in the eye as you come through the door.

It sits close to the wall

At 18cm deep it projects far less than a swing-arm or a picture light, which makes it genuinely usable in a corridor, beside a door frame, or in the tight run of wall next to a bed.

It works in pairs

Symmetry is where this light earns its place. Two either side of a bed, a fireplace or a mirror, and a plain wall becomes a considered one.

Standard fitting, no fuss

A standard E14 bulb means replacements are easy to find and you can choose your own warmth and brightness rather than being locked into whatever the fitting came with.

Three

The Jenning story

The Jenning belongs to a tradition of English wall lighting that predates the ceiling pendant becoming the default. Before every room had a central light, illumination came from the walls. It sat lower, spread wider, and made rooms feel softer and more human in the evenings.

That is the effect we were after here. A shape that would have looked at home in a Georgian hallway, made in a metal that improves with age, finished so that it feels lived with rather than newly bought. Nothing about the Jenning is trying to be the focal point. It is trying to make the room around it look right.

Four

Size and placement

The Jenning
H38cm/W14cm/D18cm

A single generous size, weighing 2kg. The backplate measures H 13cm, W 5.5cm, D 2cm, giving a slim fixing point that suits panelling, narrow wall sections and spaces between doorways. As a general rule, hang the centre of the light around 150cm to 165cm from the floor in a hallway, and around 120cm to 140cm beside a bed so the shade sits below eye level when you are sitting up to read.

Best for

Hallways, bedsides, alcoves and any wall that needs light without losing floor space.

If you are hanging a pair, allow at least 90cm between centres so the pools of light read as two rather than one.

Five

Materials and craftsmanship

Solid brass frame and arm. Not plated, not brass-coloured steel. The warm antique finish is applied to give the metal an aged softness from the day it arrives, so it never has that showroom shine that dates a room.

Fabric shade. Chosen for the quality of light it gives rather than for pattern. It softens the bulb, warms the tone, and keeps the light flattering to skin, paint and timber.

Wall mounting plate included. The fixing plate is supplied with the light, so your electrician is not sourcing parts on the day.

Small variations in the antique finish are part of how solid brass is made and are not faults. Two lights from the same batch will be siblings rather than twins.

How it compares

Jenning Brass Wall Light Standard high street wall light

Weight and feel in the hand 2kg, substantial Typically under 1kg
Seven

Interior styles it suits

Quiet luxury and contemporary classic

Against off-white, mushroom or soft clay walls, the antique brass reads as warmth rather than metal. This is the Jenning at its most natural.

Period and traditional

Panelled hallways, picture rails and older plasterwork suit it particularly well, because the proportions are drawn from that tradition.

Transitional

If your furniture is modern but your building is not, brass wall lighting is one of the easiest ways to bridge the two.

Hospitality and boutique commercial

Corridors, guest rooms and reception areas benefit from the low projection and the soft, repeatable glow of a fitting hung in sequence.

Avoid brass polish and abrasive cleaners. The antique finish is meant to sit softly on the metal, and polishing will lift it back to raw brass. If a mark needs more than a dry cloth, a barely damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one is as far as we would go.

Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician in line with current wiring regulations. This is an interior fitting and is not suitable for bathrooms zones requiring IP rated lighting, or for outdoor use.

Complete the look

Home Décor
Mirrors, frames and small brass accents that echo the finish and keep a hallway or bedside feeling considered rather than assembled.
Pots & Vases
A single ceramic or stoneware vessel below a wall light gives the pool of light something to land on and adds quiet texture.
Potted Plants & Trees
Soft foliage catching low wall light is one of the simplest ways to warm a corridor or a landing in the evening.
Eleven

Questions, answered

What size bulb does the Jenning take?
A standard E14 small screw fitting. We would suggest a warm white LED at around 2700K for the softest result. Bulbs are not included.
How far does it stick out from the wall?
18cm. That is comfortably shallow for a hallway or a narrow landing, and it will not catch a shoulder as you pass.
What are the backplate dimensions?
The backplate measures H 13cm, W 5.5cm and D 2cm. The slim width makes it straightforward to centre on a panel or a narrow section of wall.
Is it solid brass or brass plated?
Solid brass, with a warm antique finish. It will age gently rather than wearing through, which is the main practical advantage over a plated fitting.
Do I need an electrician?
We recommend it. The light is hardwired and should be installed by a qualified electrician in line with current regulations. The mounting plate is supplied with the light.
Can I use it in a bathroom?
No. This is an interior fitting for dry rooms and is not IP rated for bathroom zones or outdoor use.
Can it be dimmed?
Dimming depends on your circuit and your choice of bulb. Fit a dimmable LED and pair it with a compatible LED dimmer switch, and the Jenning dims beautifully.
How high should I hang it?
Around 150cm to 165cm from the floor to the centre of the light in a hallway. Beside a bed, drop to around 120cm to 140cm so the shade sits below eye level when you are sitting up.
Should I buy one or a pair?
A single light works well in a hallway or an alcove. Either side of a bed, a mirror or a fireplace, a pair is what gives you the symmetry this design was drawn for. Allow at least 90cm between centres.
Will the brass darken over time?
Slightly, and we consider that a feature. The antique finish deepens gently with age. Avoid brass polish, which will strip the finish back to bright metal.
