The bench that seats three and asks for a third of the space

Tan leather over a solid ash frame, with a curved backrest that floats clear of the seat and slim tapered legs. 180cm of quietly modern dining seating.

A bench does two things chairs cannot: it seats more people in less room, and it slides fully under a table when it is not in use. This one adds a back, which is what makes it comfortable enough to sit on for a whole evening. Browse all dining seating.

Stylist's note

Bench along one side, chairs along the other. Matching six chairs is what makes a dining room look like a showroom.

The detail that makes it different

Most dining benches have no back at all, which is why most dining benches end up unused after the first course.

A backless bench is fine for twenty minutes and uncomfortable for two hours, and it is always the seat nobody chooses. The Bramfield has a full upholstered backrest, which turns it from overflow seating into somewhere people are happy to sit for an entire evening. That single decision changes how a dining room actually gets used.

The way the back is built matters too. It floats clear of the seat on slim supports rather than joining solidly to it, so you can see through the gap. On a 180cm piece that lightness is what stops the bench reading as a wall of leather down one side of a table.

Solid ash for the frame. Ash bends and holds better than almost any other European hardwood, which is why it has been the timber of choice for chair-makers for centuries, and why the legs can be this slim without flexing.

Then the leather. Tan is the one leather colour that improves rather than simply wearing: it darkens gently where hands and light reach it, and it develops a patina across years of use that a fabric seat never will.

Why you will love it
  • A proper backrest, which is what makes a bench comfortable beyond the first twenty minutes
  • Seats three comfortably in the space two chairs and their gaps would take
  • Slides fully under a table, giving you a dining room back when nobody is eating in it
  • Real tan leather that darkens and develops a patina rather than wearing out
  • Solid ash frame, the traditional chair-making hardwood, with slim tapered legs
  • Floating back that keeps a 180cm piece looking light rather than solid
  • 15kg, movable by one person, which matters on a piece you pull in and out
  • Works beyond the table, at the foot of a bed or along a hallway wall
Size and table fit
The Bramfield
W180cm/H80cm/D57cm

Weighing 15kg. At 180cm it seats three adults comfortably, or three children and an adult at a squeeze. The overall height of 80cm is measured to the top of the backrest, so it stands slightly above most dining tables and reads as a piece of furniture rather than disappearing.

Best for

Dining tables of 180cm and over, kitchen tables, hallways and the foot of a bed.

Match it to your table length. A bench should be roughly the length of the table it sits against, or slightly shorter. On a 180cm to 220cm table this sits correctly. On a 150cm table it will overhang at both ends.

The backrest and tucking. Because it has a back, the bench will not slide completely under the table the way a backless one would. It tucks until the backrest meets the table edge, which still recovers most of the floor space. Measure your table height against the back if full tucking matters to you.

Allow 90cm behind for people to get in and out, same as you would for chairs. Browse dining tables if you are buying both together.

How our stylists would use it
Bench one side, chairs the other

The arrangement we would specify almost every time. It seats more people, it looks less matched and more collected, and it is considerably easier on a room than six identical chairs. Carvers at the ends finish it.

Contrast the timber

Pale ash against a warm reclaimed pine or acacia table gives you contrast rather than a near-miss match. Against another pale timber the two can blur, so add something darker elsewhere in the room.

Tan leather is a colour, not a neutral

It reads warm and quite strongly, so let it lead. Chalk, oatmeal, putty and warm plaster walls all work. Olive and deep charcoal are excellent against tan. Cool grey is the one to avoid.

Soften it

Leather and timber are both hard surfaces, so a rug underneath and a couple of cushions along the bench give the arrangement somewhere soft to land.

Not only for dining

At the foot of a bed, along a hallway wall, or in a boot room. A bench with a back works in all three where a backless one only works in the last.

Materials and craftsmanship

Tan leather. A natural material with grain, tonal variation and the small marks of the hide's own life. Those are the marks of real leather rather than faults, and they are precisely what a bonded or faux leather cannot produce. It will darken gently and develop a patina where it is used most.

Foam filling. Beneath both the seat and the backrest, giving resistance and comfort across a long meal rather than a token pad.

Solid ash frame. A pale, tough, straight-grained European hardwood with visible open grain. Ash takes stress without splitting, which is why it has been the chair-maker's timber for centuries and why these legs can be slim without feeling fragile.

Timber grain and leather tone vary between pieces. If you are ordering a bench and matching chairs, order together where you can.

Living with leather, honestly

Leather behaves like a natural material, which is the reason it looks the way it does. Here is what to expect rather than what sounds best.

Softening and easing where people sit most
First year
Darkening gently with handling and light
Over years
Wiping with a soft dry cloth
Weekly
Conditioning with a proper leather cream
Twice yearly
Spills blotted immediately, never rubbed
Straight away
Fading if it sits in strong all-day sun
Avoid

Two honest notes. Direct sunlight is the one thing genuinely bad for leather, drying and fading it faster than any amount of use, so keep the bench out of a south-facing window if you can. And a radiator directly behind it will dry the hide over time.

Natural marks, grain variation and slight tonal differences across the hide are characteristic of real leather and not defects. A perfectly uniform surface is the sign of a heavily corrected or bonded finish.

Questions, answered
What are the dimensions?
W 180cm, H 80cm, D 57cm, weighing 15kg. The 80cm height is measured to the top of the backrest.
How many people does it seat?
Three adults comfortably. On a bench, allow around 55cm to 60cm per person, so 180cm gives three a proper amount of room rather than a squeeze.
Will it tuck under my table?
Partly. Because it has a backrest, it tucks until the back meets the table edge rather than sliding fully underneath the way a backless bench would. That still recovers most of the floor space.
What size table does it suit?
A table of 180cm to 220cm. Roughly the same length as the bench or slightly longer is the rule. On a 150cm table it will overhang at both ends.
What is the seat height?
Please check the product details at checkout for the exact seat height on this item, or get in touch and we will confirm it against your table before you order.
Is it comfortable for a long meal?
Yes, and that is the point of the backrest. A backless bench is fine for twenty minutes and less so for two hours. This one is built for the sort of lunch that runs into the afternoon.
Is it real leather?
Yes, tan leather over foam on a solid ash frame. Grain, tonal variation and small natural marks are characteristic of real hide rather than faults.
Is it suitable for a family with children?
Leather is one of the more forgiving dining surfaces, since spills sit on the surface rather than soaking in and can be blotted away. Blot rather than rub, and condition the leather twice a year.
Does it need assembly?
Please check the delivery details shown at checkout for this item, and get in touch if you need it confirmed before ordering.
Can I use it somewhere other than a dining room?
Yes. At the foot of a bed, along a hallway wall or in a boot room. The backrest is what makes it work in all three rather than only as dining overflow.
How do I care for the leather?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth, blot spills immediately, and condition with a proper leather cream twice a year. Keep it out of strong direct sunlight and away from a radiator.
How long is delivery?
Allow 10 to 14 days. It travels with our specialist furniture courier, who will call ahead to arrange a time. Full details on our delivery page.
Complete the look
Aim for 180cm to 220cm. Pale ash against warm reclaimed pine gives contrast rather than a near-miss match.
Bench one side, chairs the other. It seats more people and looks collected rather than bought as a set.
Leather and timber are both hard. A rug underneath quietens the room and warms a hard floor.
A couple along the bench soften a long run of leather and add the colour tan sits well against.
Warm bulbs at 2400K to 2700K bring out the tan. Cool light turns leather grey and flat.
Napkins, crockery and serveware in the same natural register finish the table it sits against.
If 180cm is longer than your table takes, the wider range covers shorter and backless options.
