Most Halloween décor is only good for October. This is a sculptural object that happens to suit it.

The difference is the design. Clean modern lines and a smooth silhouette rather than feathered detail or a cartoonish expression, which is what lets it sit on a shelf in March without anyone thinking of pumpkins.

The matte finish is doing real work. Gloss black would read as plastic and catch the light in all the wrong places. Matte reads as stone or cast iron, absorbs light rather than reflecting it, and gives the piece a proper graphic outline against a pale wall.

And a dark object is genuinely useful in a warm neutral room. One deeper note is what stops a scheme built on oatmeal and timber reading flat, and a bird is a considerably easier way to add it than a black chair.

Note the depth. At 5cm and 6cm these are slim, front-facing pieces rather than fully rounded sculptures, so give them a wall or a backdrop rather than the middle of a table.

The 22cm and 16cm together give you the height variation that turns two objects into an arrangement. Place them close and slightly overlapping rather than evenly spaced.

A matte black silhouette needs contrast to read. Against a chalk or oatmeal wall it is striking; against a dark bookcase it disappears entirely.

The point of a black object in a neutral room is that it is the exception. Add three more dark pieces and none of them do the job.

A pair on a mantel with candles and a few dried stems is a whole scheme, and considerably better than anything orange. Take the stems away in November and the birds stay.

A slim graphic shape wants something with volume nearby. A ceramic vessel or a low bowl gives the grouping its contrast.
