Height is the figure that matters. Aim to match the top of your mattress.

The rule for a bedside is level with the mattress top, or within about 5cm of it. Most divans and framed beds put the mattress at 50cm to 65cm, so at 50cm this suits a lower bed. Against a high divan it will sit noticeably below, which means reaching down for a glass of water in the dark.

Measure your mattress top before ordering. It takes ten seconds and it is the single thing that decides whether a bedside works or irritates you every night.

The 45cm width is compact, which is what makes this work in a small bedroom or a guest room where a wider chest would crowd the bed. It takes a lamp, a book and a glass without feeling full.

Allow room for the drawers. At 38cm deep the drawers need clear floor in front, so avoid wedging it hard against a radiator or a wardrobe door swing.

The rattan lattice is everything.

A full-coverage woven pattern across both drawer fronts adds genuine texture and visual depth to what is otherwise a compact, pared-back piece. It catches morning light across the weave, and it brings the organic warmth of natural fibre into a bedroom that timber alone would keep flat.

The oak frame is lightly aged in a sandy, greige tone rather than a pale or blonde finish, which is the harder colour to get right and the more useful one to own. It coordinates naturally with linen bedding, natural wood flooring, rattan accessories and the full spread of neutral bedroom palettes.

The gunmetal knobs are the right hardware here: dark enough to contrast against warm oak and pale rattan, understated enough not to compete with either. Brass would have fought the rattan; chrome would have looked wrong entirely.

And the drawer interiors are painted grey rather than left raw, which is a small thing that most bedsides skip. On a piece you open every day, the inside deserves the same finish as the outside.

A pair either side of a bed is what makes a bedroom look finished. A single bedside always reads as the half of a pair you have not bought yet.

On a 45cm top, a lamp of 40cm to 50cm tall with a base under 20cm leaves room for everything else. Anything larger and the surface is gone. Aim for the bottom of the shade at roughly shoulder height when sitting up in bed.

A lamp, a small dish for rings and earrings, and whatever you are reading. A bedside that is styled has nowhere for a glass of water, which is what it is actually for.

Woven texture wants a friend. A basket in the corner, a rattan mirror frame or a jute rug underfoot ties the lattice into the rest of the room rather than leaving it as an isolated detail.

Aged oak and natural rattan want warm neutrals: oatmeal, linen white, clay and mushroom. Against a cool grey scheme the greige oak turns muddy and the rattan looks yellow.

Dust the rattan with a soft brush rather than a cloth. A lattice weave holds dust in the openings, and a dry paintbrush or a vacuum with a brush attachment on low clears it in seconds where a cloth just pushes it around.

Nothing wet on the rattan, ever. Natural fibre softens and distorts when it gets damp, and a drawer front is not something you can easily replace.

The oak takes a soft dry cloth along the grain. A barely damp cloth on a mark, dried straight after, and nothing abrasive.

Use a coaster. A glass of water lives on a bedside overnight, which is exactly how timber tops get rings.

Keep it out of strong direct sun and away from a radiator. Sun lightens oak unevenly, and dry heat is hard on both timber and natural fibre.

What to expect. Rattan varies in tone across the weave, and oak varies in grain and figure. Both are natural materials behaving correctly rather than faults, and yours will not match the photograph exactly.
