Terra Brown Ruffled Ceramic Dish

A wide, shallow ceramic dish with a softly folded, ruffled rim, glazed in a glossy, speckled terra brown that pools deeper in every fold. A generous 35cm centrepiece for a coffee table, console or kitchen island, as lovely empty as it is with a single layer of fruit.

Will it fit? At 35cm across it is a centrepiece rather than an accent bowl, and the ruffle adds a little to the footprint, so allow slightly more clear surface. At just 10cm high it is low enough to see across on a dining table.

Materials and finish

The rim is folded and waved while the clay is soft, so the peaks fall at irregular intervals and heights, and no two dishes are quite the same shape.

A glossy terra brown reactive glaze, warm rather than cool, pools darker in the hollows and thins over the peaks, with darker speckles scattered across the interior.

Care and honest expectations

Hand wash only, in warm soapy water with a soft cloth, working gently into the folds. Nothing abrasive. Lift from underneath rather than by the rim, as the peaks are the thinnest points, and use a mat on polished surfaces.

This is a decorative dish, so please check with us before using it for food; whole fruit is fine. For indoor use only. The rim shape, glaze pooling and speckling vary from piece to piece.

Styling and pairs well with

Leave it empty as the one low, wide piece on a coffee table, or fill it a third full at most with lemons, pears or pinecones. On a hallway console it neatly gathers keys and post. It shows best on a pale surface or linen runner.

Pair it with something tall from our pots and vases collection, or group it on a tray with books and a candle.

Questions

Can I use it for food?

It is a decorative dish, so please check with us before serving food in it. Whole fruit in its skin is fine.

Is it dishwasher safe?

No, hand wash only, to protect the glaze and reach into the folds of the rim.

Will mine look exactly like the photograph?

No two are the same. The rim is shaped while the clay is soft, so the folds and glaze pooling vary on every piece.

A wide ceramic dish with a hand-shaped ruffled rim, in terra brown.

35cm across and 10cm deep, in a glossy terra-brown glaze with the rim folded and waved by hand.

Shallow and wide rather than deep, so what goes in it is spread out and visible rather than piled up. Browse all bowls and dishes.

Stylist's note

A coffee table needs one low, wide thing. Almost every other object on it will be tall.

The measurements, and what it holds

Dish
DIA35cm/H10cm

Glazed ceramic with a hand-shaped ruffled rim. Wide and shallow rather than deep.

35cm across is generous. This is a centrepiece, not an accent bowl.

The proportion is what makes it useful. At 35cm wide and only 10cm deep, whatever goes in sits spread across the base rather than piled in a heap, so a few good things look considered where in a deep bowl they would disappear.

On a coffee table, allow the dish plus clear space around it. On a 140cm table it takes up a quarter of the length, which is why it works better as the single central object than as one of a group.

On a dining table, 10cm is low enough to see across, which is the test a centrepiece has to pass.

The ruffled rim adds a little to the footprint where the waves reach outward, so allow slightly more than 35cm of clear surface.

The detail that makes it different

The rim is folded by hand, so no two are the same shape.

A moulded scalloped edge repeats itself exactly, and it always looks moulded. Here the rim has been waved and folded while the clay was soft, so the peaks fall at irregular intervals and at slightly different heights around the circumference. That irregularity is the whole difference between a piece that looks made and one that looks manufactured.

The glossy terra-brown glaze pools darker in the hollows of the ruffle and runs thinner over the peaks, which gives the surface a tonal depth that a flat-rimmed dish in the same colour would not have. The shape and the glaze are working together.

There is mottling and speckle through the glaze, darker flecks scattered across the interior, which is characteristic of a reactive glaze rather than a flat coloured one.

And the colour is warm brown rather than cool, closer to terracotta than to chocolate, which is what lets it sit against timber, linen and stone without looking heavy.

Why you will love it

  • A hand-shaped ruffled rim, irregular in a way a moulded edge never is
  • Glaze pooling in the folds, giving the surface tonal depth
  • Wide and shallow, so contents spread out rather than piling up
  • Low enough for a dining table, where a taller centrepiece blocks sightlines
  • Warm terra brown that sits with timber, linen and stone
  • Speckled reactive glaze rather than a flat colour
  • Works empty, which is how a decorative dish spends most of its life
  • No two alike, since the rim is shaped by hand

What to put in it

Nothing at all

The first option, and often the best. A dish with a rim this sculptural has enough going on that it holds a coffee table empty, and it is the arrangement that shows the ruffle properly.

Fruit

The obvious one and still the right one. Lemons, apples or pears against a warm brown glaze, in a single layer rather than heaped, is a genuinely good look on a kitchen island.

Something seasonal

Pinecones and dried seed heads in autumn, faux greenery in December, a few large dried stems the rest of the year. See our faux flowers and greenery.

The things that gather

On a hallway console, keys, post and sunglasses. A wide shallow dish is far more forgiving of that than a deep bowl, since nothing gets lost at the bottom.

Not soup

Worth saying plainly. Check with us before using it for food, since a decorative glaze is not the same thing as a food-safe one.

How our stylists would use it

Let it be the low thing

Every surface arrangement needs one wide, low object among the tall ones. A dish this size does that job better than anything, and it is usually the element people leave out.

Do not fill it

A third full at most. The interior glaze and the shape of the base are half the product, and burying them defeats the point.

Give it a pale ground

Dark brown on dark timber disappears. On a pale console, a light stone surface or a linen runner the silhouette and the ruffle both read properly.

Light it from the side

A glossy glaze and a folded rim are both made of reflection and shadow. A lamp nearby does far more for it than an overhead fitting, which flattens the ruffle completely.

One sculptural piece per surface

This has enough character to be the interesting object on a table. Pair it with plain things, a stack of books and a simple candle, rather than with another statement piece.

At a glance

Diameter: 35cm
Height: 10cm
Material: Ceramic
Glaze: Glossy terra brown, speckled
Rim: Hand-shaped ruffle, irregular
Care: Hand wash only
Food use: Please check with us before use with food
Use: Interior only

Care and honest expectations

Hand wash only. A dishwasher will dull a decorative glaze over time, and the ruffled rim has folds a machine will not reach properly anyway.

Warm soapy water and a soft cloth, working into the folds of the rim where dust and residue collect. Nothing abrasive on a glossy glaze.

Check with us before using it for food. A decorative glaze is not automatically food safe, and it is worth a message rather than an assumption. For dry items such as fruit in its own skin there is no concern; for anything wet or acidic, ask first.

Mind the rim. A hand-folded edge has thinner points at the peaks, which is where a chip would start. Lift it from underneath rather than by the rim.

Use a mat on a polished surface. A ceramic base on timber will mark if the dish is slid rather than lifted.

What to expect. The rim shape, the glaze pooling and the speckling all vary from piece to piece, so yours will not match the photograph exactly. That is the point of a hand-shaped rim.

Questions, answered

How big is it?
See the measurements at the top of this page. It is wide and shallow, which is what lets contents spread out and makes it low enough to use as a dining table centrepiece.
Can I use it for food?
Please check with us before you do. A decorative glaze is not automatically food safe, and we would rather confirm than assume. Dry items such as whole fruit are not a concern.
Is it dishwasher safe?
No, hand wash only. A dishwasher dulls a decorative glaze over time, and the folds in the rim are not something a machine cleans well in any case.
Will it look exactly like the photograph?
No, and that is deliberate. The rim is shaped by hand while the clay is soft, so the peaks fall at different intervals and heights on every piece. The glaze pooling varies with the shape.
Does it work empty?
Yes, and it is one of the pieces we would recommend leaving bare. The ruffled rim and the glaze give it enough presence to hold a coffee table on its own.
What should I put in it?
Whole fruit in a single layer, pinecones or dried stems seasonally, or on a hallway console the keys and post that otherwise scatter. Keep it a third full at most, since the interior glaze is half the product.
Is it fragile?
It is ceramic, so treat it as such. The peaks of the hand-folded rim are the thinnest points and where a chip would start, so lift it from underneath rather than by the rim.
Can I use it outdoors?
We would not recommend it. A glazed decorative dish left outside through a frost can crack if water is trapped in it.
How do I clean the rim?
Warm soapy water and a soft cloth, working into the folds where dust collects. Nothing abrasive on a glossy glaze.
How is it delivered?
It ships packed for ceramic. Current timescales and charges are on our delivery page.

Complete the look

Where a wide low dish does its best work, as the single central object.
A few large dried or faux stems laid in it, rather than arranged upright.
Candlelight on a glossy glaze is what brings out the pooling in the folds.
Something tall beside something low. That contrast is the whole arrangement.
On a coffee table, a tray under the group ties the dish to whatever sits beside it.
Smaller pieces for a shelf, where a 35cm dish would be too generous.
