Ridgway Geranium Studies | Set of Four

Block and row measurements assume 8cm gaps. Keep gaps between 5cm and 8cm so the four read as one arrangement, and centre the group at about 145cm from the floor. Above furniture, leave 20cm to 25cm clear.

These are reproductions of real botanical plates. The original credit line, published by J Ridgway of 169 Piccadilly, July 1835, sits at the foot of each image, and the plate numbers are still in the upper corners.

The hand-coloured petals in crimson and dusty pink lie over the fine engraved line. Beneath each specimen is an uncoloured leaf study, all on warm, slightly foxed paper.

The frames are dark timber with a deliberately distressed finish, which lets the plates read as something inherited rather than new.

Cleaning. Spray the cloth, not the glass. Dust the frames with a dry cloth or soft brush, and use nothing wet or abrasive on the aged finish.

Placement. Keep the set out of direct sunlight so all four age evenly. Avoid bathrooms and the wall directly above a radiator.

What to expect. The distressing varies from frame to frame, and printed colour can differ slightly from how it looks on screen.

Hang them as a two-by-two block above a sideboard in the dining room, or run them in a single row up a staircase or along a long wall.

They look richest against deep olive, sage, soft charcoal or clay. Add a single stem of greenery in a stoneware vessel below to echo the foliage.

Are these real antique prints?

They're faithful reproductions of genuine plates published in 1835, including the original credit lines and plate numbers. They aren't antique originals.

No. They're related studies, which is what makes the group look like a collection.

Do they come with hanging fittings?

Can I hang them in a bathroom?

We wouldn't recommend it, as steam and humidity aren't kind to paper or timber frames.
