A solid elm board, 70cm long including the handle.

Solid elm with a natural grain finish, 40cm wide and 70cm long with the handle.

Elm is warmer and more characterful than oak, with an interlocked grain that swirls rather than running straight. No two boards come out the same. Browse all kitchen and dining.

Stylist's note

A board this size does not go in a cupboard. Leave it against the splashback and let it earn its place.

The measurements, and what fits

Board
W40cm/L70cm

Solid elm with a natural grain finish. The 70cm length includes the handle.

70cm is long. Measure your counter and your cupboard before ordering.

The handle is part of the length. The usable surface is shorter than 70cm, so if you are measuring against a specific space, allow for the handle projecting at one end.

It takes a full charcuterie spread down the length of a table, a whole loaf with room to cut, or a cheese board for six without anything crowding.

It will not fit most cupboards. At this size it is a piece that lives out, leaning against a splashback or flat on a counter, rather than one you put away between uses.

The detail that makes it different

Elm, rather than the oak or beech everyone else uses.

Elm has an interlocked grain that swirls and wanders rather than running in straight lines, which gives every board a pattern the next one will not repeat. Oak is handsome but uniform; beech is pale and plain. Elm has character before you have done anything to it.

It is also a dense hardwood, which matters on a board that gets used. It takes knife work and daily handling without marking up quickly, and the interlocking grain gives it a natural resistance to splitting that straighter-grained timbers lack.

The natural finish leaves the grain visible rather than burying it under lacquer, which is what lets the board read as timber rather than as a product. It also means you can re-oil it and bring it back whenever it needs it.

Three ways to use it

Prep

Bread, fruit and everyday kitchen work. The size means you are not shuffling things aside to make room.

Serve

Cheese, charcuterie and sharing boards, carried to the table by the handle. At 70cm it runs down the centre of a table as a serving piece in its own right.

Display

Leaned against a splashback or standing on a counter. A board with grain this distinctive is worth looking at when nothing is on it.

At a glance

Width: 40cm
Length: 70cm including handle
Material: Solid elm
Finish: Natural grain
Character: Interlocked grain, different on every board
Care: Hand wash only, do not submerge
Maintenance: Food-safe mineral oil or board butter periodically

Care and honest expectations

Hand wash only, and never leave it soaking. A wooden board left in water will warp and split, and that is the single thing that ruins them. Wash, rinse and dry it straight away.

Dry it thoroughly and stand it on edge rather than laying it flat while it dries, so air reaches both faces evenly.

Oil it periodically with a food-safe mineral oil or board butter. Every few weeks with heavy use, a few times a year otherwise. It feeds the timber, keeps the grain from drying out and deepens the colour.

Never put it in a dishwasher. Heat and prolonged water will crack a solid timber board, usually within a cycle or two.

What to expect. Knife marks, a little darkening around cut areas and a gradual deepening of the colour. On a board with grain this characterful, that use blends in rather than standing out.

Questions, answered

How big is it?
See the measurements at the top of this page. The length includes the handle, so the usable surface is shorter than the overall figure, and it is large enough that it will not fit most cupboards.
Can I cut on it?
Yes. Elm is a dense hardwood and takes knife work well. Expect marks over time, which blend into a grain this characterful rather than standing out.
How do I look after it?
Hand wash, dry immediately, and oil it periodically with a food-safe mineral oil or board butter. Never submerge it, never leave it soaking and never put it in a dishwasher.
Why elm rather than oak?
Elm has an interlocked grain that swirls rather than running straight, so every board differs from the last. It is warmer in tone than oak and more distinctive than beech, while being just as dense and hardwearing.
Will it look exactly like the photograph?
No. Elm grain varies considerably from board to board, which is the reason to choose it. Yours will be recognisably the same board but individual in its figuring.
Is it a good gift?
One of the better ones for a wedding or a housewarming. Practical enough to be used every day, good-looking enough to feel chosen rather than bought off a list.
Can I use it as a serving board?
Yes, and the handle makes it easy to carry to the table. At this length it works as a centrepiece serving board for cheese or charcuterie rather than needing a platter alongside.
How is it delivered?
It ships as a parcel, packed for solid timber. Current timescales and charges are on our delivery page.

Complete the look

Crockery and serveware in the same natural register, so nothing competes with the grain.
Small bowls alongside for olives and dips, so the board holds the dry things.
For carrying what the board does not, when you are serving a full table.
Candlelight down a table beside a timber board is the whole look.
Something low and dark alongside, to anchor all that warm timber.
