The sideboard that looks like it came with the house
The Harrogate recycled pine sideboard brings something new furniture cannot buy. The South Pine has already lived a life, and that history is written into every plank.
Weathered grain, warm amber tone and knots no factory could reproduce. 207cm wide with four generous cupboards behind classic panelled doors. Serious storage with equally serious character. See the full console tables and sideboards range.
Two hundred and seven centimetres of storage, and not one plank the same as another.

The detail that makes it different
The recycled pine is not a concession. It is the source of everything that makes this piece worth owning.
New timber, however fine, cannot replicate what reclaimed South Pine gives you. The depth of grain, the warm amber patination and the natural imperfections are the accumulated evidence of decades of previous life, and no finishing process applied to fresh wood gets close. This is why a reclaimed piece settles into a room immediately, while new furniture often takes years to stop looking new.
The hand-applied wax seal is the second half of the story. Wax protects the surface while letting the timber breathe, so the grain stays visible and the variation in tone across each plank is preserved rather than flattened. Lacquered and painted finishes seal a surface beneath a uniform film. Wax sits in the wood instead, which is why the Harrogate has a warmth and a tactile quality those alternatives simply do not offer.
Classic panelled doors and antique style handles complete a silhouette that reads as traditional and timeless without committing to any particular period. It sits as comfortably in a contemporary kitchen diner as in a farmhouse dining room.
Why we chose this piece
Reclaimed furniture is easy to do badly. A great deal of what is sold as reclaimed is new timber distressed to look old, and it always shows, because manufactured wear repeats itself in a way genuine age never does.
The Harrogate is the real thing. The South Pine has been genuinely salvaged and given a second life, which means the character is earned rather than applied. That also makes it a properly sustainable choice, and one of the few cases where the environmental argument and the aesthetic argument point in exactly the same direction.
We chose it for its proportions as much as its material. At 207cm it is a statement piece, but at 84cm high and 50cm deep it stays generous without dominating. Four cupboards with adjustable shelving is a genuinely useful configuration rather than a decorative one, and the panelled doors keep everything you would rather not look at politely out of sight.
Why you will love it
- Genuinely reclaimed South Pine, not new timber distressed to imitate age
- Hand waxed, so the grain stays visible and the surface stays tactile
- Four cupboards with adjustable shelving, configured to whatever you own
- 207cm of storage that hides clutter behind panelled doors
- Warm amber tones that flatter almost every neutral palette
- A wax finish that can be refreshed at home rather than professionally restored
- Sustainable by nature rather than by marketing claim
- Entirely unique, with grain and knots found on no other piece
Will it fit your room?
A substantial piece, so measure before you order rather than after. Allow at least 240cm of clear wall so the sideboard has breathing space at either end, and check the doors have room to swing fully open. The 84cm height sits just above a standard kitchen worktop, which makes it a comfortable serving surface as well as a storage one, and at 50cm deep it holds dinner plates flat with room to spare.
Dining rooms with a long clear wall, open plan kitchen diners, generous living rooms and wide hallways where a run of storage genuinely earns its place.
Measure the route as well as the room. Doorways, stairwells and tight turns matter on a piece this wide. Tell us if anything looks close and we will help you work it out before you order.
Four cupboards, configured your way
Four cupboards with adjustable interior shelving, which means the sideboard adapts to what you actually own rather than dictating it. Set the shelves low and wide for dinnerware and serving platters. Set them tall for glassware and decanters. Take one out entirely for table linens, board games or media equipment.
In a dining room it takes a full dinner service with room left for candles, napkins and the things that only appear at Christmas. In a living room it swallows media clutter, cables and paperwork behind panelled doors. In a kitchen diner it becomes the overflow for everything the fitted cupboards cannot take, which is where our kitchen and dining range tends to end up.
The CharlesTed styling note
Give it the longest uninterrupted wall in the room and let it anchor everything else. In a dining room, place it alongside the table rather than behind the head of it, so serving is easy. In a living room it works beautifully beneath a large window where the wall allows, with a lamp at either end.
Warm amber pine wants warm neutrals around it. Soft white, oatmeal, clay, mushroom and putty all let the timber lead. For more depth, deep olive, sage or a soft charcoal on the wall behind will make the amber tones glow. Avoid cool greys and stark brilliant white, which drain the warmth out of reclaimed pine and push it towards orange.
A pair of matching table lamps at either end is the single most effective thing you can do with a long sideboard. It frames the piece, creates symmetry and gives you a low warm light source in the evening. Warm bulbs of 2400K to 2700K are essential, as cool light makes waxed pine look flat and grey.
Work in three groups rather than spreading things evenly across 207cm. Lamp, then a cluster of ceramics and foliage at varying heights, then a stack of books with a small object on top. Leave clear space between the groups. A large mirror or a run of artwork above completes the wall.
Reclaimed pine is warm and matt, so give it something to play against. Aged brass, dark glazed stoneware, linen and a wool or jute rug underfoot all provide the contrast that stops a neutral room reading flat.
Reclaimed pine against new timber
| Harrogate reclaimed pine | New timber sideboard | |
|---|---|---|
| Depth of grain and patination | ✓ | Develops over years |
| Every piece genuinely unique | ✓ | ✗ |

| Wax finish, refreshable at home | ✓ | Often lacquered |

The last two rows matter. If you want every plank the same colour and a piece identical to the image on screen, reclaimed timber is the wrong choice. If you want character that cannot be manufactured, it is the only choice.
Materials and craftsmanship
Recycled South Pine is a softwood with an open, expressive grain, which is exactly why it takes patination so well. Decades of previous use leave the surface with a depth of colour and a knot structure that no kiln process replicates. Being a softwood it will mark more readily than oak, and on a piece defined by character that tends to be a feature rather than a problem.
The hand-applied wax seal penetrates rather than coats. It repels everyday moisture, deepens the amber tone and leaves a surface that is smooth rather than glassy. It also has the practical advantage of being repairable at home. A scuff can usually be waxed out with a soft cloth, where a damaged lacquer needs stripping and refinishing.
At a glance
Living with reclaimed pine, honestly
Reclaimed timber behaves like reclaimed timber, which is the entire reason it looks the way it does. Here is what to expect rather than what sounds best.
Avoid silicone polishes and all purpose sprays, which build up on a waxed surface and dull it. Use coasters and mats under anything hot or wet, as with any waxed timber. Keep the piece clear of a radiator if you can, since prolonged dry heat is harder on solid wood than anything else in a normal home.
