The Rustic Wooden Stool

Will it fit? At only 26cm deep, it slips beside a bath, against a hallway wall or into the gap beside a sofa where most side tables will not fit.

Height. At 39cm it is a low stool, below dining chair height and far too low for a counter or breakfast bar. It is ideal as an occasional seat, a low side table or a bedside table for a lower bed.

Solid wood, not veneer or a wood-effect board, in a naturally distressed finish that shows the grain, knots and marks of the making.

A slightly curved seat is more comfortable than a flat one. Angled legs widen the footprint for stability and give the stool a lighter silhouette.

Dust along the grain with a dry or barely damp cloth, and avoid abrasive cleaners and household sprays. Wipe spills straight away. A tray under drinks prevents rings.

In a bathroom, keep it away from direct splashing and the shower. Keep it out of strong sun and away from radiators, and check the joints once a year.

The distressed finish is designed to gather marks, and they add to it rather than spoil it.

Use it as an extra seat at the coffee table, a low side table with a candle and a book, or a plant stand for a trailing plant or faux tree. A pair either side of a bed makes an easy alternative to matching bedside tables.

Keep it to two or three objects, and let the rough timber contrast with linen, a pale rug or painted furniture.
