Which size? The large holds a mantel or shelf on its own. The small suits a narrow shelf or windowsill and looks best alongside the large. Each is sold separately.

Both are slim, front-facing pieces, so place them against a wall or backdrop rather than in the middle of a table.

Durable polyresin, which holds clean detail without the fragility of ceramic, and is light and easy to place.

Smooth matte black finish that reads as stone or cast iron rather than plastic, giving a crisp graphic outline against a pale wall. For indoor use only.

Wipe with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid water, harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners, which can leave shiny patches on the matte finish.

Buy both sizes and place them close together, slightly overlapping. Set them against a chalk or oatmeal wall, and beside a rounded ceramic vessel for contrast.

At Halloween, add candles and a few dried stems on the mantel, then remove the stems in November and let the birds stay.
