Autumn Harvest 80cm Dried Foliage Wreath

3.22kg is heavy for a wreath. A hook, not a nail.

The weight is the thing to plan for. A standard adhesive wreath hanger is rated for far less than this, and an over-door hook needs to be rated to take it. On a front door, a proper over-door hanger or a fixed hook is what you want.

Check the door clears it. An 80cm wreath on a hanger projects further than you expect, so make sure the door still closes cleanly and does not crush the foliage against the frame.

Standard front doors are 76cm to 84cm wide, so at 80cm this fills the door almost entirely. That is deliberate and it looks generous, but it does mean the door furniture is largely covered while it is up.

Above a fireplace, centre it on the chimney breast and leave clear space either side. A wreath this size does not need company on the wall.

As a table centrepiece, allow 80cm of table and keep the middle low. Candles or a small vessel inside the ring, nothing tall enough to block a sightline.

Real dried materials, at a size most wreaths do not attempt.

Natural pinecones, dried grasses, seed pods and autumnal foliage, handcrafted rather than moulded. Real dried material has an irregularity that artificial foliage never manages, and at close range on a front door that difference is obvious.

The 80cm diameter is the other half of it. Most wreaths run 40cm to 60cm and look apologetic on a full-height door. This fills the space properly.

The palette is earthy rather than orange: golden wheat, deep browns and soft neutral highlights. That is what lets it work past November. A wreath in bright pumpkin tones is autumn and nothing else; this one reads as textural and natural, so it sits comfortably as a year-round rustic accent if you want it to.

Because the materials are natural, no two wreaths are identical in the placement of the cones and pods, and yours will not match the photograph exactly.

The centre of a door wreath wants to sit at roughly the upper third of the door, not the middle. Too high and it looks stranded; too low and it fouls the handle.

Against a solid painted door, in a deep colour especially, the texture reads beautifully. On a heavily panelled or glazed door it competes, and you lose the detail.

If it is going on the front door, pick up the golden wheat or deep brown just inside, on a hallway console or in a vessel of dried stems. It makes the entrance read as one thought.

Two candles on the mantel beneath throw light up into the texture in the evening, which is when dried foliage looks its best.

Candles or a shallow bowl inside the ring. Anything tall defeats the point of a low table arrangement.

Keep it sheltered. This is the important one. Dried natural materials are not weatherproof, and driving rain will spoil grasses and seed heads. A porch or a recessed doorway is fine; a fully exposed door in a wet autumn is not.

Dust with a soft brush or a hairdryer on cool, working gently. Never wet a dried wreath.

Keep it out of strong direct sun, which fades dried material considerably faster than most people expect.

Store it flat, not hanging. Between seasons, lay it flat in a box in a dry place, ideally with tissue over it. Hanging it in a loft distorts the ring and the material drops.

Expect some shedding. Dried grasses and seed pods drop a little, particularly when the wreath is first unwrapped and when it is moved. That is the nature of real dried material rather than a fault.

What to expect. The arrangement of cones, pods and grasses varies from wreath to wreath because each is made by hand, so yours will not match the photograph exactly.
