A panelled solid mindi top sits on two turned baluster columns connected by a low stretcher bar, so the visual weight stays grounded and the silhouette reads as architectural rather than fussy. The top extends from 180cm to 230cm with one leaf, and 280cm with both, taking the table from a daily six to a hosted ten without ever feeling oversized when it's closed. The Stourton's character lives in the contrast between its base and its top. The trestle uses two solid turned baluster columns connected by a low stretcher — the bones of a centuries-old refectory table — but the top is detailed in a much more contemporary way, with a clean panelled construction, a flat moulded edge and a softened limed finish that lets the mindi grain read clearly without the orange tones of stained alternatives. Crucially, the trestle base sits inboard of the table ends, leaving the corner seats completely unobstructed; nobody at this table is straddling a leg. The extension works on a butterfly mechanism — the leaves fold and store inside the table itself rather than living separately in a cupboard — and the engineered metal slides keep the action smooth even at full extension. How does the butterfly extension work?
The two halves of the top pull apart on engineered metal slides. The leaves are stored inside the table itself — they fold up and out into position rather than needing to be retrieved from a cupboard. One leaf takes the table from 180cm to 230cm (seats up to eight), both leaves take it to 280cm (seats up to ten). Closed, it sits at 180cm and seats six comfortably.
What's the clearance for chairs and laps?
There's 72.5cm of clearance to the floor at the long sides and 63cm at the table ends below the lip. That's enough for standard dining chairs to tuck fully under and for adults to sit comfortably without knocking knees against the apron.
What is mindi wood, and how does it compare to oak?
Mindi is a hardwood grown in South-East Asia with a grain pattern and density comparable to oak — warm, lightly figured and strong enough for daily use. It tends to be lighter in tone than European oak, which is why it takes a limed finish so well. Cared for properly, it has the same long lifespan as any quality hardwood.
How do I care for the limed finish?
Wipe spills promptly with a slightly damp cloth and dry the surface immediately — standing moisture can mark the finish over time. Use placemats and coasters under hot dishes and wet glasses. A light wax once or twice a year keeps the top even. Avoid silicone-based polishes and abrasive cleaners.
