The Sonoma Weatherproof Basket Planter

The outdoor planter that transforms an entrance. Handwoven wicker with a hidden waterproof liner, so it can actually live outside.

Frame a front door with olive trees, fill a porch, or add texture to a patio. Three sizes. One of our most reordered pots and planters, for good reason.

Why customers love it

The natural woven look of a basket, with a liner that means you can water it and walk away.

The detail that makes it different

Most people arrive here having tried both obvious options. The pretty wicker pot that sagged after one summer. The practical garden planter that added nothing to the doorway.

What separates the Sonoma is its hidden liner, fully integrated and invisible from the outside. The weave passes over it seamlessly, so all you see is the warmth and texture of a handwoven basket. What you do not see is the reason it can sit outside without soaking through, staining or losing its shape.

In practice that means no black nursery pot on show, and no compromise between how a planter looks and how it copes with soil, watering and rain. It is a rattan planter you can plant into, water and leave in place, which is a very short list of things a wicker pot can usually do.

Which size should I choose?

Size is the decision most people get wrong, almost always by going too small. As a rule, the planter should be roughly a third of the height of the plant it holds.

Small
H37cm/W33cm

A table-top and step-side size. Herbs on a kitchen windowsill, a cluster on a garden table, or lining a set of steps in a repeating rhythm.

Best for

Lavender, herbs, spring bulbs, succulents and small potted flowers.

Medium
H44cm/W42cm

The workhorse of the three and our most reordered size. Substantial enough to read as a proper garden planter, still light enough to move with the seasons.

Best for

Hydrangeas, box balls, ferns, flowering plants and smaller faux trees.

Large
H51cm/W52cm

The statement piece. This is the planter people are picturing when they search for an outdoor olive tree pot, and the one that changes how an entrance reads from the pavement.

Best for

Olive trees, bay trees and generous seasonal displays.

All heights include the handle. Group all three in graduating sizes for a display that looks intentional rather than accidental.

How to create a luxury front door display
Work in pairs

Symmetry is what makes an entrance feel considered. Two large planters holding matching olive or bay trees, one either side of the door, is the highest impact change you can make to the front of a house.

Or work in odd numbers

If your doorway only allows one side, group three in graduating sizes instead. Tallest at the back, smallest at the front, staggered rather than in a line.

Keep the planting restrained

One species per planter, repeated, reads as expensive. Mixed bedding in every pot reads as busy. Structural evergreens in the large, softer seasonal colour in the small.

Finish at soil level

A layer of decorative moss or bark over the compost hides the mechanics and lifts the whole thing. A small detail doing a disproportionate amount of work.

Indoors as well as out

The lining makes this an outdoor planter first, but a great many Sonomas never leave the house. Indoors it works as a cover pot for a large houseplant, a hallway planter for a faux olive tree, a log basket beside a fireplace, or generous storage for throws in a snug.

If you use it inside for real plants, keep the plant in its nursery pot and sit it on a saucer within the basket rather than planting directly. Watering stays tidy and you can swap the plant seasonally without disturbing anything. For dedicated indoor storage, see baskets and storage.

Care, and what to honestly expect

The Sonoma is handwoven, so its lifespan outdoors depends on how exposed it is to British weather and the small amount of care it gets across the year.

Fully exposed to UK weather year-round
2 to 3 years
Under a covered porch or sheltered area
3 to 7 years
Outdoors occasionally, brought in for bad weather
5 years plus

To prolong its life: avoid prolonged standing water, raise it slightly off wet ground with pot feet or a paver, and bring it in during severe winter weather. Brush the weave occasionally to lift dust from the crevices. The liner protects the inside when planting, but the weave itself will gently soften and mellow over time as it would on any country porch.

Questions, answered
Can these baskets stay outside all year?
Yes. The Sonoma is designed for outdoor use and the concealed liner protects it from soil and moisture. Shelter it under a porch where you can, and bring it in during prolonged severe winter weather. Left fully exposed year-round, expect two to three years of good service.
What size is each basket?
Small is 37cm high by 33cm wide, medium 44cm by 42cm, and large 51cm by 52cm. All heights include the handle, and width is measured across the widest point of the weave.
Do they have drainage holes?
No. The liner is solid, which is what keeps the weave protected. For real plants outdoors, add gravel or crocks at the base and keep the plant in its nursery pot so excess water escapes into the gravel rather than sitting around the roots.
Can I plant directly into them?
You can, and the liner will handle it. We generally suggest keeping the plant in its nursery pot inside the basket instead. Watering is easier to control, there is less risk of waterlogging, and you can change the planting seasonally without emptying the whole thing.
Will the wicker fade?
Over time and in strong direct sun the tone softens slightly. Most customers find it settles into a mellow, weathered finish rather than looking worn. Sheltered positions hold their colour longest.
Are they suitable for olive trees?
Yes, and it is the most popular use. The large size is made for olive and bay trees, and a matching pair either side of a front door is the display we are asked about most. Medium suits younger specimens. Browse our faux olive trees.
Can I use faux plants?
Absolutely. Faux olive trees, hydrangeas and ferns all sit beautifully in the Sonoma, and with no watering involved the basket lasts considerably longer. See our faux flowers and greenery range, and top the base with decorative moss to hide the pot.
Are they lined?
Yes. Every Sonoma has a built-in waterproof liner, fully integrated and invisible from the outside. The weave passes over it so all you see is the basket.
Do they arrive assembled?
Yes. Each basket arrives fully assembled with the liner already fitted. Nothing to build and nothing to add before planting.
Can I use them indoors?
Yes. Indoors the Sonoma works as a cover pot for large houseplants, a hallway planter, a log basket or blanket storage. Sit potted plants on a saucer inside to keep watering tidy.

Complete the look
The classic pairing for the large size, and the one that makes a front door look finished.
Structure that holds its shape all year with no upkeep at all, bay and box included.
Soft seasonal colour for the medium size, hydrangeas in particular.
Mix stone and ceramic with woven for a layered, collected entrance rather than a matched set.
If it is indoor storage you are after rather than planting, start here instead.
