Pinecone Textured Bowl

Not food safe. This is a decorative bowl rather than serveware.

It is not suitable for food. The glaze is decorative, and the bowl is not dishwasher or microwave safe either. Worth knowing before it arrives, because a wide shallow bowl in this colour looks like it belongs on a dining table with something in it.

What it is for is display. Pinecones and dried seed heads in autumn, faux stems laid flat, or nothing at all. On a hallway console it takes keys and post.

Only 8cm deep, so whatever goes in sits spread across the base and visible rather than piled in a heap. That shallowness is also what makes it low enough to see across on a dining table.

Allow more than 32cm of clear surface. A bowl this wide wants space around it rather than being crowded by other objects.

Rough outside, smooth inside. That contrast is the whole design.

The outer wall is moulded in overlapping scales, row upon row like the underside of a pinecone or a fir cone, each one raised enough to catch light individually. The glaze pools dark in the recesses between scales and runs bright over the domes, which is what gives the texture its depth.

The interior is completely smooth and glazed in a mottled amber that shifts from dark at the base to brighter at the rim. Putting texture only on the outside means the bowl reads as an object from across a room and as a surface when you look into it.

The rim carries the texture over the edge, so the scalloped scale pattern is visible from above as a ruffled outline rather than a clean circle. It is a small detail and it is what stops the bowl reading as a plain dish with a pattern on the side.

Porcelain rather than earthenware, fired hard and dense, which is why a bowl this size weighs 2.36kg and why the glaze has the depth it does.

Every surface arrangement needs one broad low object among the tall ones. A 32cm bowl does that job better than anything, and it is usually the element people leave out.

The interior glaze is half the product, and filling the bowl hides it. On a coffee table this holds the surface with nothing in it at all.

Pinecones, dried seed heads or a few large faux stems laid flat rather than standing. A single layer, so the base still shows.

A warm brown bowl on dark timber disappears. On a pale console, a light stone surface or a linen runner both the texture and the outline read properly.

Moulded relief is made of shadow. A lamp nearby or candlelight across the scales brings the whole outer wall up, where overhead light flattens it completely.

Not for food or drink. The glaze is decorative rather than food safe, and that includes dry items as well as wet ones.

Wipe clean with a soft damp cloth, dried straight after. Not dishwasher safe and not microwave safe.

Use a soft brush on the scales. A moulded texture holds dust in the recesses between the scales, and a dry paintbrush clears it where a cloth will catch.

Nothing abrasive on the glaze, which will dull it permanently in patches.

Lift it from underneath with both hands, not by the rim. 2.36kg of porcelain is a serious weight, and the textured rim is not a comfortable grip.

What to expect. The mottled interior glaze varies from piece to piece, so yours will not match the photograph exactly. Use a mat on a polished surface, since a heavy base will mark timber if the bowl is slid.
