Enough to keep clutter out of sight, not so much that the piece becomes a heavy block of cabinetry. Hallways are the most neglected rooms in most houses, and the reason is usually depth. There is rarely space for anything substantial, so people settle for something small and apologetic, and the entrance to the house ends up saying nothing at all. A pair of matching table lamps at either end frames 210cm beautifully and gives you a low warm welcome in the evening, which is the single best thing you can do for a hallway. Aged brass, dark glazed stoneware, linen and a wool or jute runner underfoot all provide the counterpoint that stops a neutral hallway reading flat. A long runner in particular echoes the horizontal of the console and makes a corridor feel wider.

Work in two or three groups and leave clear space between them. Lamp and a small tray at one end, a cluster of ceramics and foliage at the other. Keep the middle relatively clear so there is somewhere to actually put things down. On the lower shelf, two large baskets beat six small objects every time. A large mirror above completes the wall and doubles the light.

Reclaimed timber, visible grain and turned legs are the language of farmhouse interiors, kept clean enough here to suit a modern house rather than only a period one.

The warm weathered finish protects the wood while leaving the grain visible and the surface tactile rather than glassy, which is the opposite of what a heavy lacquer does. The turned pedestal legs are shaped individually, giving them a depth of profile that pressed or moulded alternatives never quite match.

Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth and wipe spills promptly rather than letting them sit. Use mats and coasters under anything hot or wet.

A clear furniture wax once or twice a year will nourish the timber and deepen the tone. Avoid silicone based polishes and all purpose sprays, which build up on a waxed surface and dull it over time.

Keep the piece clear of a radiator where you can, since prolonged dry heat is harder on solid timber than anything else in a normal home. On a hallway piece it is worth checking there is no direct heat from a nearby radiator before you position it.

Colour and character will vary from the photographs. Grain, knots, tonal shifts and the pattern of weathering differ from piece to piece because the timber is genuinely reclaimed.
