Jute is the workhorse of natural-fibre rugs — sustainable, hard-wearing, and the most reliable way to ground a room in warm earthy texture without commitment to a particular colour palette. The Sofia carries the natural variation in tone and weave that you only get from genuinely handwoven jute, never the flat uniformity of machine-spun synthetics pretending to be natural. The flat-weave construction is the Sofia's quiet signature — most jute rugs in this category are either chunky braided or loosely woven in a way that snags, sheds and pulls apart at the edges. The Sofia uses a denser tighter flat-weave, which keeps the surface smoother underfoot, holds up better to chair legs and footfall, and stops the edges from fraying the way looser jute rugs typically do within months. The neutral tone is the second considered choice: somewhere between sand and warm tobacco, with enough character to anchor a room and enough restraint to layer beneath a patterned rug, a hide, or a vintage runner without competing.

At 160 × 230cm, the Sofia is sized for a standard living room (front legs of a three-seat sofa on the rug, coffee table fully on it), a dining area beneath a six-seat table, or as a generous bedroom rug at the foot of a double or king-size bed. It also works as a base layer in larger rooms, with a smaller patterned rug or hide layered on top.
Is jute comfortable underfoot?
Jute has a slightly coarser texture than wool or cotton — closer to natural linen than to a plush pile. Most people find it pleasant barefoot, but if you're sensitive to texture or want a softer feel, layer a sheepskin, hide or wool throw on top, or pair with a rug pad underneath for extra cushion.
How do I clean a jute rug?
Vacuum regularly using a low-suction setting without a rotating brush, which can pull at the fibres. For spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth — never rub or soak. Jute is sensitive to moisture and shouldn't be washed or steam-cleaned. For stubborn marks, a barely-damp cloth with a tiny amount of mild soap, used sparingly, will work — and dry the area thoroughly afterwards.
Will the Sofia shed?
All natural-fibre rugs shed slightly when new — this is normal and settles down significantly within the first few weeks of use. Regular vacuuming during this period clears the loose fibres quickly. A rug pad underneath also helps reduce friction and shedding over the rug's lifespan.
Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Because each Sofia is handwoven from natural jute, every rug carries subtle variations in tone, fibre thickness and weave density. The character you see in the photos is representative — your Sofia will have its own distinctive personality.
