Why elm?
Elm has a looser, more expressive grain than oak and a warmer tone, with knots and movement that no two pieces share. It is a hardwood with an interlocking grain that resists splitting, which makes it wonderfully practical for tables that will see decades of family life.
Across the collection, the elm is given a softly limed finish. It lifts the timber, keeps even the largest pieces from feeling heavy and sits beautifully alongside linen, stone, jute and dark glazed stoneware.

The dining room
The heart of the collection is its two dining tables, each two metres long and a full metre wide, with room for platters down the centre and a crowd around the edges.
Fairford Elm Cross Leg Dining Table

Waxed elm in a pale limewashed tone, on two X-frames joined by a low central stretcher. Because the base sits well inboard of the corners, chairs pull in cleanly at every seat, and a bench slides along either side with no corner leg in the way. Living with elm
Elm asks very little. Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills promptly and use mats and coasters under anything hot or wet. Avoid silicone polishes and all-purpose sprays, keep pieces away from radiators and refresh waxed surfaces once or twice a year. Over time the grain softens and the tone deepens, and small marks from daily life settle into the character of the piece.
